Rambutan

rambutan

I am waiting for this tropical fruit to be in season. Should be available in a week or two. The above photo is a shot of a rambutan I ‘borrowed’ from the stall. (fruit was imported from Thailand and hence, not very fresh)

Let me try to describe rambutan to people who have never seen nor eat rambutan.

Rambut in Malay means hair. Hence, this is a hairy fruit. It is about the size of a ping-pong ball, covered with red hairy skin when ripen. The flesh inside is white in colour and taste very sweet. Some species have crunchy flesh, whilst others softer flesh. It has a single seed inside.

Rambutan ranks second, after durian as my favourite fruits. More about them when I get to eat these fruits by the bundle (of 50 fruits per bundle).
