Shao Hsing Hua Tiao Chiew
Heh, you musn’t call yourself a Chinese unless you have a bottle of this in the kitchen. Previously, I used to get all confused and cold feet whenever I see this mouthful of name ‘Shao Hsing Hua Tiao Chiew’ in Chinese recipes. But, hah! this bottle of rice wine is less than RM10.
Use it generously in:
- Stir fry vegetables
- Steam prawns/fish
- Add some to your soup
- Marinade meat
- Heck, just splash them into every one of your food.
My favourite is to chopped lots of ginger and garlic, steam prawns with this wine and when the prawn is about cooked, pour in one beaten egg white. Yummy!
Shao Hsing Hua Tiao Chiew can be found in any Chinese medicine halls, liquor section of the supermarkets and even bigger sundry shops.
It has 16% alchohol content but don’t worry, the alchohol evaporates when heated (during cooking) so none of my kids ever got drunk. Safer than the liquor in chocolate bottles.
..coming up next : Kiam Bak or salted, deep fried pork marinated with Shao Hsing Hua Tiao Chiew

In Shaw Xing, China, it is a tradition that when a family have a new born baby girl, they start to brew this wine, and burried it in the ground until so many donkey years… on this daughter’s wedding, they will dig out this wine for celebration and called it “Nue Er Hong” - (Nue Er means Daughter, Hong means Red - I guess meaning auspicious) BUT if unfortunately this particular daughter past away before she get married, the parent will dig out this wine too, but they name this wine “Hua Tiao” - (Hua means Flower, Tiao means withered ). I find Shaw Xing people are quite “Lomantik”
