Fine Cuisine seems to be the ‘in’ word lately. Gone were the glamour of ‘Western Food’ or ‘Fusion Food’ that most restaurants like to name their establishments. Fine Cuisine to me means French foods which I can’t afford. Definitely, not German Knuckles and sausages.
Scarlet is the previous Mr. Ho’s Fine Foods (which has closed down) and now operating at Ed’s Deli in Jalan Burmah. The waiters and chefs are the same and so is the food.
We went there the second time today. Had been there once for dinner but I accidentally deleted all my photos. It was raining heavily and we reached there before 1 pm and were the only customers. I must say that I love Scarlet’s decor, menu with scarlet ribbons, tea lights with scarlet glass containers and the cheong-sam type of wall coverings. When we were there the other night, the place was packed. But not today.
I was there with all my sons and had the set lunch. This is the pork spare ribs. Cost RM20++ which comes with mushroom soup, coffee or tea and a scoop of Haagen Daaz ice-cream. Worth the money. If you order chicken, it is only around RM15++
We also ordered the lasagna but I find it a bit expensive because it is RM25++ and is not part of the set lunch menu. So, it is just only one lasagna with some salads.
If you are going in a group, do check out their Scarlet Platter which is RM120++ for four persons. It has all kinds of seafoods, grilled meats and sausages. A huge platter enough for six small-eaters, I would say. Or the other dish to try is the German Pork Knuckle which is another big platter of meats. It is pig’s trotter roasted till the skin is crispy and the meat tender. A bit like our local roasted pork but not that flavourful. It is a 2-person portion but enough for my husband, my eldest son and I.
Restaurants like these tend to close down very fast in Penang. I hope Scarlet stays so that at least we have a decent place for some meats at reasonable price. I am not sure what has happened to the Mr. Ho’s previous’s place in Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah. Anyone?

(August 3, 2006 - 12:09 pm)Hi, you can try Salsa at somewhere near Hotel Malaysia. It is a fine cusine restaurant with nice food and also reasonable price. Do try out the set, yummy! {^_^}
