Review : Sin Kheng Ann Hainan home-cooked food

Sin Kheng Ann is this little, old, Chinaman style coffeeshop located off Chulia Street at Lorong Chulia.  It is one road after the 7-11 corner. It has been there as long as I can remember and they are still serving the same tasty foods.

We have five dishes for our dinner but I only managed to get photos of two of them because everyone is hungry and forks and spoons were everywhere!  Do you know that when rice grains are taken in macro mode, they look like little maggots?  Eewwss…that’s why I dare not show the pics here.

This bowl of gulai tumis with white pomfret has the freshest white pomfret and a mild tasting curry.  In a way it is good that the curry is not overpowering because one can still enjoy the delicious and expensive white pomfret meat.

We also have this soft tofu stir fried with huge prawns and leeks.  Good for mixing with white, hot rice.  Other dishes we had were dark soya pork served with pickled cucumber, bangkwang char (turnip/cabbage) and an egg dishes.

If you go to Sin Kheng Aun, make sure you order their orh ark, kiam chye ark and Inche Kabin.  All of these dishes were sold out today.  🙁

Our total bill for 4 adults, 2 kids plus drinks only costs RM60.  The customers are all regulars and the boss seems to know everyone by their first name, where their children are studying, asking about the health of their parents etc etc.  It is like having  a big family dinner at Sin Kheng Aun.

I think their chef had change, my father said that the dishes are a bit different compare to last time.

Ho Jiak – The food and service is still ok but too bad I don’t get to eat the orh ark and inche kabin lor. However, all the cooks in the kitchen are still old-old uncles and aunties. There is another almost similar place See Kong Hooi, that one really taste different and no longer nice.

Can have more details about Inche Kabin? I hope not to pronounce the dish something else which make the uncle/auntie misunderstand.. 😛 The name itself make me wanna try it out!

I go there occasionally but don’t you think it’s a bit pricey for that kind of serving?

Used to go there with my parents in the 70s whenever we came to Penang. However, now that I stay in Penang, I have never gone there… Must go there again one day…. If I remember correctly, our favarite dish at that time was salted fish…
